Take advantage of the chance to visit the world's largest museum of Russian national art, and acquaint yourself with an incredible variety of artistic masterpieces spanning from the 11th to the 19th century.
Although it’s considered one of Russia’s most famous art galleries, the State Tretyakov Art Gallery actually began as the private collection of Muscovite art patron, Pavel Tretyakov. The gallery was named after Tretyakov after he generously donated his artworks – and his home – in order to create a museum that would both support and celebrate Russia’s national art and artists.
While visiting the gallery you’ll notice that the principal theme of the collection reflects the history of the country. This is especially evident in the many historical pictures and portraits of key figures in Russian history, such as tsars and politicians. These include Boyarinya Morozova by Vasily Surikov and Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on November 16th, 1584 by Ilya Repin. You’ll also have a chance to see some of the greatest examples of medieval Russian icons from the 12th to the 17th century, as well as the renowned 15th century work of art, The Trinity by Andrey Rublev. More than just history, the artworks in this museum also trace the ethnography of the Russian empire, as well as its culture of literature, music and art, which has evolved throughout the years. And, during the tour, you’ll also be able to learn more about the history of the Russian Art Group of the 19th century, as well as the Russian Art Nouveau (also known as Russian Modern Art) and see many more exceptional works of art!
This tour takes approximately 3 hours.
