Novedevichy Convent and Cemetery Tour

Novodevichy Convent and cemetery

A tour that is sure to delight all visitors and history buffs! Considered one of Moscow's most beautiful architectural, and historical, cloisters the Novodevichy Convent has been active since the 16th century and, in fact, remains so today.

Over the centuries the convent, along with many of its inhabitants, played a vital role in Russia's history, and there are even some Russian tsarinas (wives and sisters of the tsars) who were immured and buried within these walls. Here you’ll have the chance to learn more about this fascinating site, which over the centuries has not only taken a part in the medieval defence system of the city, but has also been the location of many dramatic episodes in Russian history. You’ll discover that many famous characters have links to the monastery, and have played a greatest role in Russia’s past – from the birth of Ivan the Terrible, to Boris Godunov’s election to the throne, as well as Peter the Great, his sister Sophia, and even Napoleon! As the convent has remained active since the 16th century, you’ll be able to enjoy a detailed introduction to the history of the monastery – from its inception to its unusual Baroque Moscow architecture. And you’ll have the opportunity to learn all about the rules of convent life, as well the various customs, traditions and restrictions, of which many are still in place today – following the renewal of monastic life during the 20th century Soviet period. And, of course, the convent’s breathtaking panoramic view will ensure plenty of great photo opportunities!

During the tour, you’ll also gain a deeper insight into monastery’s necropolis, as well as the history of the Novodevichy Cemetery, which lies adjacent to the convent. Here you’ll be able to actually visit the graves of some of the most prominent and well-known Russians. From politicians like Nikita Khrushchev, Vyacheslav Molotov, Andrei Gromyko and Boris Yeltsin, to writers and poets like Nikolai Gogol, Anton Chekhov, Vladimir Mayakovsky and Mikhail Bulgakov. Others who have also been laid to rest here include composers, musicians and artists, such as Dmitry Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Fyodor Chaliapin, Valentin Serov, and Isaac Levitan, as well as aircraft designers Tupolev and Ilyushin – and, of course, many more. While your visit, you’ll have the chance to learn more about these famous individuals, as well as the many unusual, yet beautifully sculpted tombstones and monuments, which were created by some of the best Russian sculptors of the 20th century.
